Moto3™ championship leader Luis Salom set a rapid pace in Friday morning’s opening practice session for the Hertz British Grand Prix at Silverstone. After a brief rain shower, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider scorched to the top of the timesheets from Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger.

It looked as though the rain had effectively signalled an early end ten minutes before the chequered flag came out, but the few drops that fell did not have any significant affect on grip levels. Salom led the way with his lap time of 2’15.911 – already quicker than any of the Moto3 laps at Silverstone last year – with nearest challenger Viñales two tenths of a second in arrears. The rest of the times were very much mixed up, as riders had slowed to avoid incidents when the light rain arrived.

Three British riders are in the Moto3 field this weekend. John McPhee led the way from 26th position for Caretta Technology – RTG, while Racing Steps Foundation KRP wildcards Wayne Ryan and Kyle Ryde were locked together in 31st and 32nd. Free Practice 2 starts at 1:10pm local time (GMT +1).
