Maverick Viñales significantly improved upon the fastest ever Moto3™ lap of Phillip Island in Saturday morning’s final practice session ahead of the Tissot Australian Grand Prix. The Spaniard, who also set the pace on Friday, led from Jonas Folger and John McPhee.

Becoming the first rider ever to post a sub-1’37.000 Phillip Island lap on a Moto3™ bike, Viñales (Team Calvo) - rapid all around the circuit and assisted by a slipstream along the Gardner Straight - again topped the timesheets at the newly-resurfaced venue, as he led the way with 1’36.650. Folger was four and a half tenths of a second down for Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3, with Scotland’s McPhee a further three tenths in arrears for Caretta Technology – RTG. Mahindra Racing’s Miguel Oliveira ended proceedings in fourth spot.

Championship leader Luis Salom was fifth for Red Bull KTM Ajo, with McPhee’s teammate and leading Australian Jack Miller seventh. Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins, currently Salom’s closest challenger atop the standings, was ninth and one second slower than Viñales. Fresh from her first points finish in Malaysia last weekend, Team Calvo’s Ana Carrasco ran as high as fourth before ending the session in 13th place. Romano Fenati suffered a frightening moment, running his San Carlo Team Italia bike onto the grass at the final corner, while there was a highside crash for Australian wildcard Callum Barker (Barker – McVey Racing).

Moto3™ Qualifying begins at 1:35pm local time (GMT +11).
