Redding shows off airbag in super High-Speed

Scott Redding is the star of this week’s Off-Season Show as the Englishman takes the role of model, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Tech Air airbag system thanks to the MotoGP™ high-speed cameras.

Ahead of last year’s Aragon Grand Prix, Redding took time out of his busy schedule on the Thursday afternoon to record the piece at MotorLand’s Turn 9.

Fitted into the Alpinestars racing leathers, which themselves take some eight hours to assemble and each contain over one mile (1.6km) of thread, the Tech Air system monitors rider movements through a group of sensors on the suit which take in data every two milliseconds.

Should a crash be detected, the airbag will be deployed in just 50 milliseconds…four times quicker than it takes to blink a human eye.

The lightning-quick effectiveness of the suit can only be appreciated with the Dorna Sports high-speed cameras, usually recording race action at frame rates of anything up to 2,500 frames per second. With a few drops of water sprinkled onto Redding’s then Moto2™ race suit, the video results are spectacular to say the least…
