Opening run sees Kallio in charge under floodlights

Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing Team) showed his pace in Moto2 FP1 in Qatar, with Thomas Luthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) and Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) also in the top three.

Kallio’s best lap of 2’01.146 at the end of the first intermediate class session of the year gave him the lead by a 0.116s gap from Luthi. Nakagami was third and both he and Luthi had led the timesheet before Kallio’s later improvement.

Completing the top five were Esteve Rabat (Marc VDS Racing Team) and Xavier Simeon (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2).

Italians Mattia Pasini (NGM Forward Racing) and Simone Corsi (NGM Forward Racing) were sixth and seventh, with Moto3 World Champion Maverick Viñales (Pons HP 40) doing well on his debut in eighth.

Another debutant Jonas Folger (AGR Team) was ninth, as Alex De Angelis (Tasca Racing Moto2) wrapped up the top ten.
