Espargaro delivers solid result on Forward debut

It was a good start to the 2014 season for the NGM Forward Racing Team in Qatar, with both of their riders finishing in the top ten.

Aleix Espargaro made a strong debut on his ‘Open’ Forward Yamaha under the Losail floodlights, finishing the race in fourth position.

He was the first rider of the new Open class to cross the finish line and the race saw him bounce back from a disappointing qualifying session in which he crashed twice and ended up ninth on the grid. That had been hard to take for the Spaniard after he demonstrated some good pace in free practice.

“I’m happy with this result for myself and the team,” Espargaro commented. “Saturday’s two mistakes made my race really difficult. I started from the third row and I struggled a lot with the full tank to overtake the two Ducatis, as they had a great advantage in terms of top speed in the long straight. I didn’t want to make any mistakes, so I didn’t push as I wanted from the beginning. I was patient and waited for the right moment to pass.”

“It’s a pity because we had the pace to fight with the front guys but I have to be happy because we are fourth in the championship. I thank my team and Colin Edwards as they gave me some parts of his second machine to rebuild my bike that was completely destroyed after the qualifying crashes”.

It was a decent race also for his colleague Edwards who recouped several positions from 14th on the grid to finish ninth.
