Differing Friday fortunes for Ducati pair

Andrea Dovizioso ended Friday’s Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas sessions in second place on the timesheet with a best effort of 2’04.495, to complete the day a second off Marc Marquez’ pace but almost 0.5s ahead of his Ducati teammate Cal Crutchlow who was ninth.

The story of the day was really the gap that Marquez put between himself and the rest of the field, but the World Champion aside Dovizioso was otherwise the fastest man on track in Austin, setting his best lap on a soft tyre in preparation for Saturday qualifying.

Analysing the day’s work Dovizioso stated, “The overall level is very high and it’s quite difficult for everybody. We do have problem and we’ve struggled a lot but I’m quite good at this track, as I’m quickly able to understand the line to take. That’s very important because nobody has a great deal of experience here.”

“I’m happy about the lap time. Sure we used the soft tyre but we have to always think about staying in the top ten for qualifying. But with the hard tyre we are close to the fastest riders, apart from Marquez!”

Crutchlow completed the day towards the bottom of the top ten and was 1.491s off pace man Marquez, prompting the Englishman to admit, “We know we need to improve on cornering but on my side of the garage we went in the wrong direction with the setting this afternoon. ‘Dovi’ went in a different way and it went better. That comes from my inexperience of riding the Ducati but I think we will make an improvement tomorrow.”

He added, “We know we need to improve on turning. I rode a bike that was a lot easier to turn last year, I’m trying my best, but it’s not easy.”

Asked if he could confirm a previously reported comment that his Ducati GP14 machine is too electronics-heavy Crutchlow answered, “I think we have too many systems on our bike, we need to make it more simple.”
