Espargaro sets rapid pace on Friday morning

Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) set a 1'39.357 fastest lap in FP1 at the Gran Premio bwin de España on an extra soft tyre, to lead from Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez.

‘Open’ Forward-Yamaha equipped Espargaro produced two hot laps at the end of the session with the second of those two rapid circulations giving him the top spot on the timesheet by a 0.357s margin.

The race fastest lap at Jerez belongs to Lorenzo from 2013 (1'39.565) and he was just off that pace in practice in second place with a 1’39.714.

Marquez, meanwhile, was third fastest with a time 0.492s behind Espargaro, with his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa making it four Spaniards in the top four with a similar time. Lorenzo’s Movistar Yamaha MotoGP colleague Valentino Rossi completed the top five, 0.8s off P1 pace.

Alvaro Baustista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), Yonny Hernandez (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) completed the top ten.

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) walked away from a crash at Turn Five late in the session and finished 12th, whilst Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team) made a comeback from a hand injury in 18th, with his fitness to be further assessed after FP2.
