SAATC: Pole for Atiratphuvapat at Sentul

Thai rider Nakarim Atiratphuvapat qualified on pole in the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup on Saturday at Sentul.

At the second round of the series in Indonesia, Atiratphuvapat notched a best lap of 1’37.428, putting him at the head of the front row. Joining him on the first row of the grid are Japanese pair Yuta Date (+0.260s) and Ryo Mizuno (+0.282s).

The day commenced with another free practice session with the 23 riders using the outing to further familiarise themselves with the 3.96km track. At 2pm in the afternoon the qualifying session then took place, in intensely hot conditions, with a 36°C ambient temperature and with track temperature soaring to 48°C.

Atiratphuvapat adapted best to the heat and held off the challenge of his Japanese rivals at the head of the timesheet, with Date and Mizuno pressuring him for pole. Two further Japanese riders qualified in fourth and fifth respectively, Ayumu Sasaki (+0.321s) and Kaito Toba (+0.522s).

In sixth position is another Thai rider Somkiat Chantra, ahead of Takuma Kunimine (JPN), Tsurugi Kitami (JPN), Muklada Sarapuech (THA) and Fakhrusy Rostam (MAL) in the top ten.

The competitiveness throughout the field was highlighted by the top 11 riders being split by just one second and with the top 19 separated by just 1.8s. Sunday’s 16-lap race starts at 13:00 (GMT +7) and promises to be a close battle.

Cup director Alberto Puig expects another tightly contested race and believes the riders will continue to show the rapid improvement which they have demonstrated thus far.
