Doohan on the strengths of champion Marquez

Doohan on the strengths of champion Marquez

The winner of five consecutive premier class World titles from 1994 to 1998 Mick Doohan believes current MotoGP™ World Champion Marc Marquez has the requisite attributes to become an all-time great.

MotoGP™ Legend Doohan, who spent his entire 11-year career in Grand Prix racing on Honda machinery, identifies confidence as the main quality which makes Marquez so successful and thinks the young Repsol Honda rider can dominate the sport for years to come.

"He’s not scared that’s for sure!" says Doohan of Marquez. "Having that self-belief is what gets him through. It has been there throughout, it is one of Valentino Rossi’s strengths, all the way through to Wayne Rainey and a lot of people before him. It is just believing that you can get away with it. Why do some people crash at a similar speed, whilst others stay on? It is confidence and belief that they are not going to crash and they are going to get through it."

"It has been a long time since we have seen somebody like Marquez do what he does on a motorcycle and not fall off the thing. That all comes down to confidence."

Doohan is widely considered to be amongst the greatest riders of all time and during his five year spell of dominance in Grand Prix racing one particularly strong period saw him amass ten successive wins from pole in 1997.

Having watched Marquez become the youngest premier class World Champion in history last year and then start his MotoGP title defence with six straight victories from pole position Doohan acknowledges the potential of Marquez to continue rewriting the history books.

Asked directly whether Marquez could eventually become the most successful rider ever, the Australian answered, "He is certainly young enough. Rossi had a very good run, as well. Certainly today there are more races, but in our sport luck plays a big part in it. Marquez has age on his side, he has talent on his side and he is mentally strong enough as we have seen. He has had some big hits, especially in Moto2 and he has had some great races."

"He is not shy. As long as he keeps wanting to race and continue to have fun doing it, then the statistics may all be his!"
