Niklas Ajo undergoes satisfactory operation on right ankle

Avant Tecno Husqvarna Ajo rider undergoes surgery after breaking his right ankle at Assen. His participation in the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland will be decided on over the coming days.

Niklas Ajo was operated on this Tuesday at the Hospital Universitario Quirón Dexeus in Barcelona. The Avant Tecno Husqvarna Ajo suffered a distal metafissure fracture to his fibula without syndesmosis injury, plus a displaced distal epiphyseal fracture of the tibial malleolus in the Iveco Daily TT Assen last weekend.

He was thrown off his bike in a highside on Lap 7, when fighting at the front of the race.

Dr. Eugenio Jimeno, heading the medical services at the Pathology Unit for feet and ankles, performed a reduction and stabilisation procedure on the Finnish rider, placing a plate in his fibula. He also performed a reduction and stabilisation to Ajo's tibial malleolus with a clip.

It is expected that the rider will be discharged soon and will be able to fly home to Finland. His participation in the German Grand Prix on the weekend of July 13th will be decided next week, according to how his recovery progresses.

Ajo commented, “The crash last Saturday was very heavy - possibly the heaviest of my career. I even had time to think whilst I was flying through the air! Luckily I was able to undergo the operation quickly and, from today, I will begin my rehabilitation process. I will do everything possible in order to get back on my Husqvarna as soon as possible. I want to thank the medical team, Dr. Jimeno and Dr. Mir, and everyone who has sent their support.”
