Salom scores in Germany despite problems

Luis Salom added a further two points to his Moto2™ tally at the Sachsenring last Sunday, finishing the race in 14th position despite having damaged his clutch lever.

After qualifying, it looked to be an uphill struggle for the Paginas Amarillas HP 40 riders as Maverick Viñales and Salom started 13th and 24th, respectively. However, the race proved more positive, with the former fighting up to a top five placing as the latter fought through problems for 14th. Although he had wanted more, Salom was left feeling content under the circumstances.

"The start of the weekend was not all bad," explained Salom who – like Viñales – had finished on the Sachsenring podium in Moto3™ one year earlier. "On Friday we went fairly well, but things started going worse in qualifying. It was a shame because we ended up 24th on the grid, which makes things very complicated in this category and especially on this circuit, which is very twisty.

"When the race began, I made a mistake at Turn 1 and ended up running last; I had tried to pass Sam Lowes, but didn’t have enough space and without wanting to ended up touching him, which bent my clutch lever and made me go straight on. Luckily, I did not crash and was able to continue in the race. Slowly, I began recovering and the final position was actually very good because I had come from so far behind. With that in mind, I think we can be satisfied with the job we did."

Salom’s next stop will be the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Round 10 of the season on Sunday 10 August. Last year, the Spaniard finished fifth in Moto3™ despite having injured his heel as a result of a heavy crash in qualifying.
