Pedrosa secures third place for ninth podium of the season

The Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini saw Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa finish third after a difficult race start.

Starting from fifth on the grid Pedrosa was unable to pass the Ducatis of Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), allowing the front three to break away.

The Honda rider did eventually pass the Ducati pair but struggled to settle into a rhythm as Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi set a strong pace at the start of the race. Pedrosa could not shake off Dovizioso throughout the course of the race and prepared for a tough battle in the closing laps.

Lap ten saw Pedrosa’s teammate Marquez crash at the Rio corner, moving Pedrosa up into third. From here the Spanish rider improved his pace, setting his personal best time of 1’34.320s on lap 21.

Pedrosa finished 4.276s behind race winner Rossi, but did manage to charge ahead of Dovizioso for a third. A total of 215 points keeps Pedrosa second in the championship, just one point ahead of Rossi.

“Not the best race today in general, I started poorly in the first two corners as I got sandwiched so couldn’t move. It took me a while to get past the Ducatis and once I got past them I was sliding front and rear. It was hard to control the bike, I tried my best and Dovi came with me so I had to fight with him. I could see Lorenzo and the rest pulling away after just two laps,” said the Honda rider.

He continued, “I saw Marc crash and I was pushing hard. I didn’t have the best feeling and I was trying hard. I pushed to keep in front of Dovizioso as he was matching my times. I know how Andrea rides so I was ready for his attack in the closing laps. Not the best result but Yamaha was stronger this weekend and we look forward to the next race at Aragon. I like the track and the Honda usually works well.”
