Antonelli undergoes further surgery on collarbone

Moto3™ rider Niccolo Antonelli has undergone further surgery on the collarbone he injured during the mid-season break, having continued to feel the effects of the injury during last weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.

Having fractured his right collarbone in a training accident on 23rd July, Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3 rider Antonelli had another operation this Tuesday, two days after Round 13 of the Moto3 season at Misano. This came after his weekly check-up highlighted problems with the plate that had been inserted during an earlier operation.

The issue with the plate resulted in an inflammation of the area, with doctors having therefore decided that the plate should be replaced with a longer one. Successful surgery was carried out this week by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini of the Unit of Shoulder Surgery of Cattolica, located just a stone’s throw from the Misano circuit.

As Antonelli explains, the Italian’s participation in next weekend’s Gran Premio Movistar de Aragón will depend on how he feels during Friday’s opening practice.

Niccolo Antonelli:
“One week before the Misano round I started to feel some pain in my shoulder that has been gradually increasing. During the check-up we did after the Grand Prix, it was found that the plate has actually moved, probably because of the training fatigue. Another operation was therefore necessary to avoid further complications that could make me miss the entire remainder of the season.

“They have inserted a new, longer plate with two more screws; it was complex surgery and at the moment I’m feeling more pain compared with after the first surgery back in July. I will be in Aragon for the first free practice session, after which we will evaluate what to do: if I have to race with a lot of pain, it will be better to wait.”

Fausto Gresini, Team Owner:
“I'm very sorry for Antonelli, who lately is having really bad luck. The problem with the plate has already affected him over the weekend at Misano and also in Aragon Niccolo will definitely have to deal with a bad physical condition. I hope he is able to return to full strength in a short time, in order to be able to face at least the last part of the season in the best possible way and without any problems.”
