Dominant Marquez well ahead in opening run

Austin MotoGP Marquez FP1
Friday, 11 April 2014

The MotoGP™ World Champion Marc Marquez was in dominant form in FP1 at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas, leading the way from Aleix Espargaro by just under a second, with Dani Pedrosa third best.

The Repsol Honda rider set pole and the race fastest lap last year at the Circuit of the Americas en route to his first premier class win and he looked in great shape again in the Friday morning practice as he outpaced closest rival Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) by 0.887s.

The title holder’s Honda colleague Pedrosa was third fastest and was the only other rider in addition to Espargaro to get within a second of Marquez. Italians Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) were respectively 1.268s and 1.575s behind in fourth and fifth.

Englishmen Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) were sixth and seventh with the former suffering a technical issue during the session.

The top ten was completed by Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Alvaro Baustista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), with the latter having to pull off with a technical problem on his very first lap – later returning to the track on his second bike.

Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) looked out of sorts down in 12th place with a time more than two seconds off the top.
