Lorenzo on front row again for Italian contest
Saturday, 31 May 2014

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo has secured his third front row start of 2014, in third place for Sunday’s Gran Premio D’Italia TIM race.

The Mallorcan has shown a strong pace at one of his favourite tracks all weekend, but was unable to break Marc Marquez’ (Repsol Honda) streak of six pole positions. A 1’47.521s at the beginning of his second run was enough to secure third.

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) took advantage of the extra soft Open tyres to claim second position at his home Grand Prix, with Lorenzo just 0.071s behind the Italian. Teammate Valentino Rossi was down in 10th and just over 0.200s slower than Lorenzo.

It is Lorenzo’s third front row of 2014, a season that has got off to a difficult start for the double MotoGP™ World Champion. He will be looking to secure his first win of the season and continue his Mugello race domination on Sunday.

“We’re satisfied with this third place. It’s more or less second place because the Open class have the extra soft tyre that helps them. I’m very happy. More than that I am happy about my physical condition, as it has returned to the level of last year. I can keep a constant pace for more than a few laps,” he reflected.

Looking ahead to the race he said, “We’ve been in the front row more times than the podium, let’s hope we can be there again. Circumstances are different to last year so it’s more difficult to be in front, but little-by-little we keep adapting, to be as competitive as possible.”
