Maturing Viñales shows talent again in first wet Moto2™ race
Tuesday, 1 July 2014

The Moto3™ World Champion Maverick Viñales continues to develop his talent rapidly in the intermediate class and his performance in the rain at Assen was another demonstration of his progress.

The Paginas Amarillas HP 40 rider crossed the line just +0.318 behind race winner Anthony West on Saturday, keeping the bike upright whilst the likes of Luis Salom, Simone Corsi, Mattia Pasini, Sam Lowes and Sandro Cortese all fell in the wet.

It was Moto2™ rookie Viñales’ first wet race in the category and his steady ride in the difficult conditions produced his third podium on the year, maintaining his third position in the general standings. He also reduced a 60 point deficit to championship leader Tito Rabat to 48 and with 10 races remaining this season he still has a chance of fighting for the title.

Assessing his Assen ride, Viñales commented, "At first I was riding very carefully. In the warm up lap a rider ahead of me crashed and I decided to start the race calmly. I had never ridden this bike in the wet and slowly I began feeling more comfortable. Every lap I was getting faster and catching the leaders.”

“I had so much fun with the bike because you it’s great fun on the wet track, you're skidding a lot but unlike in Moto3 with the Kalex you can correct the bike’s behaviour. I really enjoyed it. On the last lap I had to try for the win but West was very fast and I had a scare, so that made me realise that second was a very good result.”
