Riders give positive reactions to IMS modifications

The updated layout and resurfacing of the MotoGP™ track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway got a positive reaction from the riders after the first two free practices at the Brickyard.

The IMS Grand Prix circuit has been redesigned with new turn configurations and braking zones, with the idea of creating more passing opportunities. Turns 3, 4, 7, 15 and 16 have been reconfigured and the entire infield section of the circuit has been repaved to create a more uniform racing surface.

Compared to the previous circuit, the new one is slightly shorter overall, by around 50m - but it retains a 16-turn layout, with ten left-corners and six right handers. Following day one of action on the new track, the feedback was highly positive from the MotoGP riders.

World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) gave his verdict on the updates after leading FP2, saying, “The new tarmac is an improvement, the grip is about the same but it’s less bumpy and that is better for the riders. With the layout maybe for Honda the older one was better, but now it’s more like a normal circuit and I think Yamaha will be a little bit closer to us. But if we get our set-up right we can be there to fight for the victory.”

Double MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo commented, “The corners that have been changed were probably too slow in the past, so now for our bike we don’t have to reduce down to first gear and it’s a bit better. So I like that. They’ve also improved where there were bumps so it’s quite flat and the grip is more constant throughout the track.”

Lorenzo’s Movistar Yamaha MotoGP teammate Valentino Rossi stated, “It’s a good first impression and I like the new layout. Especially the asphalt, the quality of the surface is a lot better. It’s easier to ride the bike and we have better grip.”

LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl explained, “It’s nice and I really enjoyed riding it more than last year. The shape of the track is more flowing. Also the surface is not bad and overall they did a good job.”

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith added, “You’ve got to give credit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway because they’ve done a great job. Along with the FIM they really did a good plan and the new surface is very good and the new corners also. It is a pleasure to ride here now and there are no more of those bus stop first gear corners which is always nice for the Yamahas as well!”

Meanwhile, Masao Azuma, Chief Engineer of Bridgestone Motorcycle Tyre Development Department, gave the tyre supplier’s verdict, saying, “The new tarmac has improved the consistency of grip around the circuit which has made it easier for riders to get a feel of how their tyres are performing. Although we cannot make direct comparisons on lap times due to the change in track layout, the best time today was over five seconds quicker than the old circuit lap record, with the better interaction between the tarmac and tyre contributing to this improvement in pace.”
