Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup resumes in Indonesia

Friday, 9 May 2014

The much-awaited second round of the 2014 Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup will take place this weekend. Following the season-opener back in Qatar, the riders now regroup at the Sentul International Circuit in Indonesia. It is Thailand’s Nakarim Atiratphuvapat who leads the way after the opening two practice sessions of Friday.

Friday’s two sessions were of 30 and 40 minutes, respectively, with the 23 riders taking the opportunity to adapt to the circuit and re-familiarise themselves with the Honda machines.

Atiratphuvapat’s leading effort came in the form of 1’38.786, which was set on the final flying lap of his 16 tours around the 3.960-kilometre Indonesian race track. Second was Japan’s Ayumu Sasaki (who had topped the timesheet in the morning session), half a second down on the leader, while Qatar race winner Yuta Date of Japan was third quickest and a further two tenths of a second in arrears. The rest of the top ten consisted of local rider Andi Izdihar plus Kaito Toba (Japan), Shafiq Rasol (Malaysia), Ryo Mizuno (Japan), Muklada Sarapuech (Thailand), Tsurugi Kitame (Japan) and Takuma Kunimine (Japan).

“It has been a productive first day and the riders have worked very hard,” commented Alberto Puig, Director of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup. “The track is very bumpy, so we advised them all to proceed with caution which they have done. The important thing today was to understand a circuit which is nothing like that of Losail in Qatar, where you have a perfectly smoothly track surface. This is a fun track, though, and was used for the World Championship back in 1996; it’s got fast sections plus some good braking zones and chicanes. The problem we have is that there are many potholes.”

A final practice session will take place on Saturday prior to Qualifying, which is set to begin at 2pm local time (GMT +7).
