Solid targets emerge for Rins and Marquez

Thursday, 17 July 2014

Estrella Galicia 0,0 team-mates Alex Rins and Alex Marquez were presented with contrasting situations in Sunday’s Moto3™ German Grand Prix. Rins found himself losing significant ground in the championship following an opening lap crash, whereas Marquez moved up to second overall after finishing in fourth place.

For Rins – who had won the Sachsenring race from pole one year earlier – the 2014 event ended just two corners in following contact with Brazilian Eric Granado.

“Right from the start of this event we have suffered,” Rins commented. “We have had a lot of falls and the whole weekend was very complicated. In the race itself I was only able to survive for two corners because at the second turn Eric Granado touched me which left me on the ground. These things happen – they come hand in hand with racing – and it will only make us stronger heading to Indianapolis.”

For team-mate Marquez it was a more positive afternoon, finishing fourth in the race. Although he lost ground to championship leader Jack Miller, the Spaniard was still able to jump ahead of Romano Fenati for second position in the riders’ standings.

“We wanted to have a good race in order to head into the summer break on a high, which is what we have done with fourth place,” he began. “I made a good start and got behind Miller, but I saw that he was having to go right on the limit; I didn’t find it too comfortable having that train of riders in front of me and there was a bit of a scare behind, so it was good to leave this race with a fourth place. It is very positive for us and, most importantly, means we keep scoring points towards the championship. I’ll use this summer break to train as hard as possible for Indianapolis.”

With Indianapolis set to launch the second half of the season on Sunday 10 August, Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Ajo) leads Marquez atop the championship by 19 points. Rins sits fifth overall, 35 points in arrears of the Australian rider with nine races to go.
