First top five of 2014 for Masbou

Wednesday, 2 July 2014

Experienced French Moto3™ campaigner Alexis Masbou was fourth at the Iveco Daily TT Assen, using his race craft to register his first top five result of the year.

The Ongetta-Rivacold rider kept his Honda ride upright whilst several championship frontrunners crashed out in the Netherlands, with Masbou sitting seventh in the championship standings after eight rounds of the year.

Masbou has just one podium finish to his name in over a decade of racing and has featured in the top five only sporadically since his first full Grand Prix campaign in 2005 – so the Assen points-haul was a pleasing result for the man from the south of France.

“It certainly wasn’t an easy weekend,” he reflected afterwards. “The race itself was not bad, compared with the results we have had since the beginning of the season, where we’ve missed out on more points which we could have had several times, so I'm very happy. I probably had the opportunity to do better, but with the pressure I felt having not yet had a top five result, I preferred to play it safe.”

With the Moto3™ World Championship’s top two failing to score points at Assen the points gap to the top tightened up at round eight, but Masbou remains ‘realistic’ about his aspirations for this year.

“I think we should forget the idea of winning the championship, it’s an additional pressure for nothing” said Masbou. “The important thing is that I ride fast and win races or make podiums. In some races, maybe we are competitive enough to expect something. But what we want and what we need are simply results. Getting on to the podium to would reward us all and create some calm in the box, so we keep putting good results together.”

Masbou has mixed feelings on visiting Sachsenring, with some inconsistent results there in the past. “I got on the podium there, I have that nice memory, but the weekends in Germany are not usually easy for me, so we are going there to try and score points and maintain our form,” he concluded.
