Traffic becomes critical concern in Moto3™

Traffic becomes critical concern in Moto3™

Rising wind during Moto3™ Qualifying at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya saw traffic at an all time high.

A slipstream can offer a large advantage at tracks with a long straight such as Catalunya and Mugello, especially in the lightweight class. The advantage of following another rider is not just felt down the straight, but also throughout the entire lap, as the rider behind is able to study the braking and lines of the leading bike. This has seen many of Moto3™ riders in particular develop the dangerous habit of waiting around on track for a faster rider, not just on their own but in large groups.

Qualifying is often not just a matter of setting a fast lap, but also battling through traffic. Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) mastered the situation today, producing a 1’50.137 to set  new circuit record. Despite this record breaking lap Bastianini still felt he was slowed by others riders, stating “Qualifying was very difficult because there was too much traffic and it’s not easy,” after the session.

Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) was more vocal on the subject, “It’s a normal Moto3 qualifying. There was some head wind down he straight so that encouraged riders even more. It’s a little dangerous but there’s nothing we can do. We’ve been spoken to about it but nothing changes,” he said after the session. Much like Bastianini Kent was able to battle through the traffic to secure a solid second position for Sunday’s race.

Race Direction did not impose any penalty points this session; despite originally informing 30 riders they may face penalties for obstructing other riders on the racing line. Instead a meeting will be held at the next race between Race Direction and the Moto3™ riders and teams to define a solution to control this problem as penalty points have been ineffective in stopping the problem.

46 points split Kent and Bastianini in the standings, the Brit having taken a dominant lead early in the season. Catalunya will be an important test for Bastianini as the Italian hunts his first Moto3™ victory; the Spanish track saw him claim his first career podium last season. They seem evenly matched on race pace, although Kent has shown the ability to put in a quick lap towards the end of a longer run which could prove critical if the battle goes down to the final laps.

No doubt Moto3™ will be another hectic battle, as in Mugello, with the aforementioned slipstream allowing riders to stay with the leading group. Meanwhile Race Direction will continue to consider the appropriate course of action to improve on-track safety in Qualifying.
