Zarco: “I was afraid that Rins was going to escape”

Zarco: “I was afraid that Rins was going to escape”

For the ninth time this season, Zarco steps onto the podium as he secures second at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

A first podium finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) after battling through the field from eighth on the grid. Ahead of the Moto2™ race, riders and teams were faced with the tough decision of which tyres to run as the race was declared wet, but the track almost fully dry. Zarco, along with all other Moto2™ riders, opted for the slick tyres but had a cautious opening lap.

Once Zarco assessed the conditions he quickly began to push with confidence, fearing that Alex Rins (Paginas Armarillas HP40) would break away at the front. From lap five onwards the Ajo rider was in podium contention, battling hard with several other Moto2™ riders. This fierce battle allowed Rins to escape, eventually beating Zarco by 0.482s. With Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Racing) down in fourth, Zarco now holds a 71 point lead over Rins in the World Championship.

Johann Zarco: “The hardest thing was the choice of tyres before the race. In the end we chose slicks and it was curious that everyone else also opted for them. At first I went carefully, but seeing it was dry I felt comfortable and I pushed to the fullest. I was afraid that Rins was going to escape, but in the end it didn’t happen. We also knew that Dominique is very strong and is difficult to overtake. I think in the end, the difference with Rins was on the straight. I tried to catch him but it was not possible. In any case, we have more points for the title fight and it was like a victory, as I started 8th and finished 2nd. See you in the Czech Republic!"
