Meet the Wildcards: San Marino

Meet the Wildcards: San Marino

Four riders will join the World Championship grid for the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

Since joining the Ducati factory as a test rider at the end of the 2012 MotoGP™ season, Michele Pirro has raced in 17 MotoGP™ World Championship rounds as both a wildcard and replacement rider. The San Marino GP will mark his 18th World Championship appearance in the last three years. At Mugello earlier in the year he also took to the factory Ducati GP15, producing an impressive eighth place finish.

Misano, along with Mugello, is a track that Ducati and Pirro do a majority of their test at. Not only will Pirro and Ducati have a solid base setting, the combination have ample experience on the new track surface in Misano, a solid advantage over many of the permanent MotoGP™ riders. Since joining Ducati, Pirro’s best finish is seventh at Mugello in 2013.

The Moto2™ class sees a familiar name return as Mattia Pasini joins the Gresini Racing team for the second time in 2015. Pasini raced to 18th at Mugello earlier this season. Twice he has stood on the podium in Misano, once in the 125cc class when he claimed victory in 2007 and then in 2009 when he was second in the 250cc race.

Alongside Pasini on the Moto2™ grid will be Luca Marini on the Paginas Armarillas HP 40 machine. Marini is perhaps best known for being Valentino Rossi’s half-brother, but the young Italian is a solid racer in his own right. Currently racing in the Moto2™ European Championship, he sits sixth overall and claimed a second place finish in just his third ever Moto2™ European Championship race.

Hungarian Adrian Gyutai will make his Moto3™ World Championship debut on the TVR machine. Gyutai is one of Hungary’s most talented riders, having won the Hungarian Superstock 600 class and has seen success in the Italian Championship. He is not the first Hungarian to race in the lightweight class, Gabor Talmacsi having put Hungarian racers on the map by winning the 2007 125cc World Title.
