Viñales: “The race in Malaysia will not be easy for us”

After a stellar ride up to sixth in Australia, Maverick Viñales is expecting a tough time in Malaysia.

The Suzuki GSX-RR has had an incredible debut season in the MotoGP™ World Championship, taking front row starts and fighting towards the front with the established factories. Alongside the GSX-RR, Maverick Viñales has had an astounding debut in the premier class and has clinched the Rookie of the Year title with ease. Phillip Island was the Spaniard’s finest ride, able to stay with the likes of Rossi, Marquez and Iannone in the opening stages and defeat Cal Crutchlow at the end. Despite riding high on the confidence of this strong showing, Viñales is aware that the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix will be a much harder race, two long straights not helping the Suzuki which struggles with top end speed.

Although both the Team Suzuki Ecstar riders will suffer down the straight, both Viñales and Aleix Espargaro are confident of making up time in the corners and hoping to remain somewhat competitive. High temperatures will also push riders to their limits and this will be Viñales’ first time competing in a race in the premier class in the scorching conditions. Although he completed a full testing program during the off-season, racing at Sepang is different as riders can’t come in for breaks mid run.

Maverick Viñales: “The race in Malaysia will not be easy for us as the circuit is more suitable for machines with more powerful engines. However, we will take advantage of our handling and speed through fast corners, trying to exploit at its best what package we have. The last weekend in Australia proved that we still have a competitive package, it is important to keep calm and be aware of our weaknesses, but also of our strengths and work at our best to get the most out of each race. I feel very positive after the good race in Phillip Island and the three races in a row are helping me and my crew to stay focused towards the end of the season.”
