Dovizioso: “He caused me a lot of damage”

Dovizioso: “He caused me a lot of damage”

Contact with another rider results in a race ending crash for Andrea Dovizioso in the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

With drama unfolding ahead, Andrea Dovizioso was riding an excellent race and battling with former teammate Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) for fourth. The racing was close and fierce but unfortunately got too close as Crutchlow made contact between Turns 5 and 6, sending Dovizioso down and ending the Ducati Team rider’s race. The damage to his GP15 was too severe for Dovizioso to even consider rejoining, forced to head back to the pits after what had been an incredibly promising race. As twice former teammates Dovizioso knows Crutchlow did not deliberately force him to crash and holds no grudge against the Brit, just disappointment towards the situation in general. The Italian had hoped to recover from his Phillip Island dissapointment, but the Malaysian GP proved an even more difficult race.

It was a devastating crash not just for the race, but for Dovizisoso’s championship prospects as well, losing valuable points on Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) as the duo battle for sixth in the MotoGP™ World Championship standings. The Yamaha rider would claim fourth as he beat Crutchlow, opening up an 18-point gap on Dovizioso ahead of the final round in Valencia. With only a single race remaining of the 2015 season, these 18 points will be incredibly difficult for Dovizioso to overcome as Smith is one of the most consistent riders in the premier class, scoring points at every round this year.

Andrea Dovizioso: “Today the conditions were very difficult, because it was really hot and it was not possible to push as hard as we did in practice. I was trying to manage the situation in order to get to the flag in a good condition. Crutchlow tried to pass me in the change of direction between Turns 5 and 6 but he was not able to control his bike and made me lose the front. I know Cal well and I’m sure he didn’t do it deliberately, but he caused me a lot of damage and in the championship we lost too many points from Smith. It was a real pity, because even with these extreme conditions we could have taken home a good result.”
