Daniele Romagnoli: “Petrux surprised everyone”

Daniele Romagnoli: “Petrux surprised everyone”

A steady season with the Octo Pramac Racing team saw Danilo Petrucci take his debut podium, his crew chief reflects on the incredible year.

In his first season with OCTO Pramac Racing Team, Danilo Petrucci surprised everyone by recording a steady growth that led him to fight for eighth place in the world rankings. ‘Petrux’ started the season on the Ducati Desmosedici GP14 that led to the extraordinary second place at Silverstone. At Misano he made a strong debut (sixth place) on the Desmosedici GP 14.2. For his 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship campaign Petrucci will ride the Ducati Desmosedici GP15. Danilo Petrucci ended the 2015 MotoGP™ season 10th in the overall standings with 113 points. Daniele Romagnoli (crew chief OCTO Pramac Racing) rates Petrucci’s 2015 MotoGP™ season and talks about 2016 season goals.

Petrux’s season - 8.5/10

“I would give him nine and it would be deserved because until Misano the season was almost perfect. Unfortunately Aragon and Motegi spoiled this amazing trend, although it was difficult to ask for more. Danilo has surprised everyone because no one would have expected these results. He managed to get into Q2 10 times (three times directly) and finished 11 times in the top 10 with the extraordinary second place at Silverstone. Danilo is a real fighter. His tenacity has been the key in gathering almost always the best result, riding with clarity and awareness of his possibilities. The 10th place in the final standing was remarkable.”

Teamwork - 8.5/10

“The mechanics did a great job, always with the situation under control by using rationality and logic. An amazing job especially when combined with a rider in the learning phase and with the characteristics of a new bike that can sometimes create problems. Even the team would have deserved nine but in the Catalunya GP, Silverstone and Motegi we could not find the best setup.”

Daniele Romagnoli and Danilo Petrucci

“I cannot express any mark. With Danilo we immediately established a very good relationship. I adopted a method already used in the past, working step by step: there are many things that a rider must learn switching to a new bike and working with a highly professional team. You should try to assimilate a little at a time and not get caught up in the rush to get everything done at once. It’s very important to establish a relationship of trust. The rider must have the least doubts possible and should concentrate only on riding. This is why we spent a lot of time studying the data of more experienced riders and this is a privilege that is not always available. Then in addition to the technical work it is very important the mental work. Then we have a passion in common: mountain bike. Ride up and down the woods with Danilo was extremely pleasant.”

Daniele Romagnoli’s season - 9.5/10

“I'm extremely happy to work with this team! None of us had worked together previously, but I would say we were in total harmony already after the winter tests. The boys approached in a very humble but extremely professional way and have done an outstanding job. Then the relationship with the “other half" of the garage was perfect, a great team spirit with a healthy competition.”

Valencia test – 8/10

“The main goal was to gain confidence with the Desmosedici and especially with the new Michelin tires. We didn’t care about lap times as we were focused in making kilometers to try to understand the new tires, their characteristics and reactions. The Desmosedici GP15 turned out as we expected: definitely better than our GP14, especially in terms of handling, and power. We used the new software that will clearly need to be improved. There will be much work to do this winter but we are confident in our capabilities and great support offered by Ducati.”
