Lorenzo: 'It was a spectacular party'

Jorge Lorenzo, the 2015 MotoGP™ World Champion, spent his Tuesday night watching his beloved FC Barcelona in the Champions League.

Jorge Lorenzo has made no secret of his passion for football and on Tuesday he watched FC Barcelona beat AS Roma 6-1 in the Champions League at the Nou Camp. After the match Lorenzo, who lifted his third MotoGP™ title in 2015, caught up with motogp.com to talk about his love of football.

“It was a spectacular match,” declared Lorenzo. “It is a long time since I have seen the team play and I am very proud. Everyone played well, especially Rakitic, Neymar, Messi, Suarez…and Busquets made some impressive passes. I am very proud of the team as they are reaching a similar level to what they achieved during the Guardiola era, which is not an easy thing to do. Maybe it is a bit different as this team plays a bit more directly, but the standard of play is very similar.”

The Spaniard got to watch the match from the Presidential Box: “I took a selfie for social media and it has already got many more retweets than any photo I put up of motorcycles; it is amazing how many people love football. I am so glad I came to this match; the club has already qualified for the knockout stages, which is important. If they can win the league, the Champions League and the Copa Del Rey for two years in a row, that would be amazing.”

As for his favourite players, he commented: “For me it is Messi, he has given Barcelona fans a lot over the years, like Ronaldinho, who I was also a big fan of. Messi I have kept in my heart, because even after many years at the top he continues to maintain a very high level in all aspects of his game and with his physical fitness. We are all very excited to continue having him in the team.

“When you are winning, it is very easy to relax and take it for granted. Luis Enrique though has instilled a great discipline in the team which means they never rest on the laurels.”

After a dramatic 2015 MotoGP™ season, Lorenzo explained his plans for the rest of the offseason: “I have been attending a lot of events and giving many interviews, when you are champion the demands are a lot greater. Now I have some things to do with my sponsors for a week, then when these events are done, I will go on holiday with my friends and girlfriend to get some rest.”

Lorenzo also talked about being involved in producing the documentary ‘Barca Dreams’ about his favourite team: “I am very happy because it is performing well across the globe and I am proud to have been able to give my input. It is great to have a two-hour documentary for people that do not know much about the history of the club to enjoy.”
