Espargaro: “Times were really far back”

Espargaro: “Times were really far back”

A top ten finish for Pol Espargaro during the first day of testing in Sepang, but work to do due to weather restrictions.

Riders and teams headed to Phillip Island in the hopes of finding sun and close to ideal track conditions, unfortunately when they awoke on Wednesday morning they were greeted with grey skies and rain. Conditions saw riders stay inside their pit box for the first hour with a handful of riders venturing out in the still wet conditions later, amongst them was Pol Espargaro. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider used the wet track to learn how the new Magneti Marelli ECU and software behave in the wet, pleased overall with the feeling. Later in the day riders were able to complete a small number of laps in the dry, Espargaro setting a 1’33.126 during this period to conclude the first day in seventh. Frequent rain showers resulted in the track never being in an ideal condition.

Pol Espargaro: “Today, we can’t really say how the test went because neither me nor the other riders really lapped a lot in the dry or the wet conditions. We all rode only a few laps and the times were really far back from the pace that we should be riding at. However, I had a satisfying run in the wet as we tested some electronic settings, yet unfortunately we weren’t able to re-confirm the information that we gained as the track began to dry. Almost the exact same thing happened when I went out on slick tyres and I had to come back in the pits after only a couple of laps. It’s a real pity that we couldn’t make more of today, but the forecast says that the conditions should improve tomorrow, so I’m looking forward to getting back on my bike and finally enjoying this amazing track.”
