Bautista: “The first rounds will be a sort of pre-season”

With limited testing, Alvaro Bautista is under no illusion that the opening rounds of 2016 will be a difficult affair.

The 2016 Aprilia RS-GP publicly debuted for the first time at the Qatar Test, unfortunately for Aprilia Racing Team Gresini this was preceded by only a single test. Bike time has been limited and Alvaro Bautista is still focusing on testing reliability on the RS-GP, a process that looks set to continue for several rounds before they can think about going faster. The tests gave the team an impression of what to expect from the new ECU and Michelin tyres, but much like the bike itself more time is needed to fully understand the potential in them.

It will be the first step on a new and long adventure for Aprilia and Bautista during the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar, the Spaniard is hoping for a better race than in 2015. Back in 2015 Bautista and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) came into contact with each other, Bautista’s brake line severing as a result and forcing him to retire. Avoiding a disaster such as this is crucial as data must be gathered with the new bike.

Alvaro Bautista: “A new season is beginning which, especially for us, will be rather demanding at the start. A new challenge, a new project and with just a few test sessions under our belts: we'll need to put forth a lot of effort to understand the RS-GP and overcome the inevitable growing pains quickly. Let's just say that the first rounds will be a sort of pre-season for us, but I'm confident. I felt comfortable immediately on the new bike, so now we'll see how it performs during a race weekend. Losail is a special track, different from all the others, with a layout that I like. What I'm not particularly thrilled about is night riding, as well as the sand that inevitably accumulates on the tarmac from the desert. In any case, both the team and I are quite pumped up.”
