A small crash in Argentina saw Maverick Viñales miss out on his first ever MotoGP™ but proved he can fight at the front.
With just a handful of laps left in the race in Argentina, Maverick Viñales was challenging Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) for the podium, pushing him at each and every corner. It all came to a dramatic end for the young Spaniard who ran wide, hit a wet piece of track and slid out. The Team Suzuki Ecstar rider was obviously upset with what happened, but he did as all MotoGP™ riders must do and learned from his mistakes. It may have ended on the floor, but the ride proved that both Viñales and the Suzuki GSX-RR are now capable of challenging the best riders and bikes in the world.
Viñales and the rest of the paddock now arrive in Austin, the scene of Viñales’ first Moto2™ victory, for round three of the 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship. Knowing he has won there before, combined with the added confidence of proving he can battle for the podium, could see Viñales produce another bit of magic in Austin. 2015 saw Viñales and Aleix Espargaro both finish inside the top ten in America.
Maverick Viñales: “I can’t wait to go to Texas and get rid of the bitter taste that the race in Argentina left me. I’m so sorry for all the work we have done that has been wasted by a single small wet spot, but, however the race and the weekend in overall gave us the confirmation that we are going in the right direction and we can fight and challenge for the top. The circuit in Austin is very challenging, so technical and yet so fast in some parts. Let’s hope for a good weather, which would allow me to enjoy the weekend even more. I like the track and I’m definitely in the mood of riding again as soon as possible, as I’m eager to get to some deserved results.”
