Rins tops Moto2™ Free Practice 1 in America

Rins tops Moto2™ Free Practice 1 in America

Leading the way in the intermediate class at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas was Alex Rins with Simone Corsi and Johann Zarco.

Conditions continued to improve at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas as Moto2™ took to the track for their first practice session of the weekend. Times quickly fell once the session started and the top riders were soon within a second and a half of the 2015 pole time. The final ten minutes of the session saw soft tyres fitted as riders gunned for a final quick lap.

Fastest of the 29 riders on track was Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) who completed several rapid laps in the closing minutes. The Spaniard was able to set a best time of 2’10.156, over a third of a second clear of the rest of the field. Many had expected Rins to runaway with the championship in 2016, but the opening two rounds saw him fail to finish on the podium. Fortunately the 2015 runner-up appears back to his best.

The 2015 Moto2™ race was won by a Speed Up bike, Simone Corsi (Speed Up Racing) showing that the Italian made bike clearly suits the circuit as he concluded Free Practice 1 in second. A 2’10.549 saw the Roman rider 0.393s back on Rins. Corsi has already had a podium finish in 2016, ending the Qatar GP in third.

Completing the top three in the session was Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport), the defending World Champion now in similar form to 2015. Argentina saw him take his first win of the year after showing well throughout practice and thanks to a 2’10.590 his Americas GP weekend is off to a similar start.

Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) suffered a fall mid-session at Turn 18, the Brit immediately on his feet to return to the pits. Once back on track the Brit was able to set a 2’10.614 and end the session fourth. The crash clearly had no ill effects on Lowes who was not only able to go faster after, but continued his wild sideways riding style.

Japan’s Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) was fifth in the session, setting a 2’10.663 on his 16th and final lap of the session.

Jonas Folger (Dynavolt Intact GP), Marcel Schrotter (AGR Team), Julian Simon (QMMF Racing Team), Tom Luthi (Garage Plus Interwetten) and Franco Morbidelli (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS) formed the top ten.

Edgar Pons (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) was not present in FP1 and will not take part in the weekend due to illness.
