Yet more points for Alvaro Bautista in Austin as he recovers after early contact with another rider, ending in 11th.
After a great round in Argentina, Alvaro Bautista and Aprilia Racing Team Gresini headed to Austin with a lot of hope. After just two rounds the RS-GP had proved a big step forward from the 2015 bike, even though the machine is still very much in testing mode. Once again Bautista and the bike did Aprilia and Gresini proud as they gathered more data thanks to a finish in the points once again. It wasn’t an easy race as Bautista made contact with another rider and was dropped down the field, forced to recover from 19th. The Spaniard got his head down and pushed hard to recover to 11th place with a fantastic ride, only stopped as his tyres dropped off with six laps to go.
While the comeback may have been difficult, it did prove that the RS-GP is capable of riding through the field and doesn’t need a good start and clean track to be competitive. Work will continue as the team and the championship returns to Europe, ready to commence the main bulk of the season. Bautista has amassed 14 points in the first three races, well on track to overcoming the 31 he scored throughout the entirety of 2015.
Alvaro Bautista: “A good race, but I cannot be 100% satisfied. I had a very good start, recovering several positions on the first turn and then contact with Baz dropped me back. When you have to come back from behind everything becomes more difficult. You have to physically force everything, deteriorating the tyre quickly and increasing the risk of making mistakes. It's a shame because in the race we showed that we can be consistent and competitive. If I had stayed up with the second group, I'm sure we could have made a play for a better position. In these first three races, I have unfortunately never been able to show my potential because of external factors, but the results that we were able to achieve anyway give me confidence.”
