Mir: "The podium tastes like victory!"

Rookie Austrian GP winner rakes in another podium…from P16 on the grid

Joan Mir (Leopard Racing) came into the Moto3™ world championship from some impressive performances in the FIM CEV Repsol, but the Spaniard's rise into contention on the world stage has seen him put together an impressive rookie campaign in 2016 - including a win in the Austrian GP, and another feather in his cap as he rode from P16 on the grid in the San Marino GP to then close out the podium. Cleverly dealing with a penalty when told to cede one position to the chasing Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) for exceeding track limits - and then immediately taking the Italian back - Mir described the podium as tasting more like a victory.

Joan Mir (P3): "It was one of the best races of my career! An incredible race after a difficult qualifying. But today my team gave me a great bike, it was really perfect. It was one of my best races, different from that in Austria. To start from so far back and start to overtake on a very narrow track like this is amazing. Gradually I was able to catch the leading group and no one then managed to overtake me. It is a podium that tastes like victory! Now next, MotorLand is one my favorite tracks and I'm really looking forward to it."
