3 years, 9 races, 9 brilliant last lap victory battles!

After a Thailand epic, motogp.com shares some more battles that have gone down to the wire in the last three seasons

The inaugural PTT Thailand Grand Prix was nothing short of spectacular. The fantastic fans in Buriram made it a weekend to remember off track while on it, we were treated to another phenomenal duel for the podium between Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), with Movistar Yamaha MotoGP duo Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi in the mix too.

But what have been the other podium battles that have gone all the way down to the last lap in the past three years?

2016

Italy: After an engine blow out for pole man and home hero Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Marquez went head to head for victory at the Italian GP, with just 0.019 seconds separating the two Spaniard at the chequered flag.

2017

France: The final lap of the 2017 French GP came down to two men: Rossi and teammate Viñales, with home hero Johann Zarco a not too distant third. The race would end in disaster for one of the Movistar Yamaha riders, the other would go on to take his third win of the season…

Austria: The first instalment of Dovizioso vs Marquez. A last lap and last corner classic we won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

San Marino: Another Marquez vs Ducati duel, but this time it was Danilo Petrucci who ran the number 93 close in wet conditions.

Japan: Dovizioso vs Marquez Round 2. A Championship title was in sight for both riders by this stage of the season and the stakes were higher than ever. Thus, an unforgettable last lap played out between the two on a rain-soaked Twin Ring Motegi circuit…

Valencia: The Grand Finale, but it would be neither of the title contenders challenging for victory. Instead, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa took on Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Zarco as the latter went in search of his maiden premier class win.

2018

Qatar: Dovizioso vs Marquez Round 3. The opening race of the season didn’t disappoint and on the final lap, we were treated to another Ducati vs Honda fight for the win. Would it be third time lucky for the six-time World Champion?

Austria: Marquez was out to conquer Ducati land but this time the Desmosedici he’d be trying to overcome wouldn’t be Dovizioso. This year, Lorenzo was the man charged with keeping the Bologna factory’s 100% winning record at the Red Bull Ring intact. Could the Spaniard do it as he entered the final lap behind the number 93 machine?

Thailand: The first ever Thai GP joined an illustrious list of races to have been decided on the final lap in recent years. What a way for the Chang International Circuit to announce its place on the MotoGP™ calendar!
