Fernandez asserts Aragon dominance in FP3

Spaniard improves his Friday time at the end of Saturday morning's action to stretch his advantage over second place Marini

In a dry Moto2™ FP3 at the Gran Premio Michelin® de Aragon, Augusto Fernandez (FlexBox HP 40) was able to top the session and stretch his overall Free Practice advantage to 0.387 over second place Luca Marini (SKY Racing Team VR46). A 1:52.365 at the death placed the pacesetter 0.492 ahead of third fastest Jorge Navarro (HDR Heidrun Speed Up).

Early morning rain meant MotorLand Aragon was wet for much of the morning’s action, but the sun soon dried the track out and for the Moto2™ riders, a full dry session awaited on Saturday morning. However, the combined standings weren’t troubled until the final handful of minutes, but it was Fernandez who was sitting pretty at the top of the FP3 and overall standings. Riders such as Navarro and Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) were penetrating the top three, but it would be Fernandez who would end with a bang: a 1:52.365 on his last flying Free Practice lap sees the Spaniard head into qualifying as the man to beat.

Second place Marini couldn’t find time at the end of Saturday morning but, thanks to his Friday time, the Italian remains in second place. Navarro, Lowes and Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) all found time in FP3 to sit third, fourth and fifth respectively in Aragon. Spaniard Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) sits sixth fastest as he and the rest of the top 10 improved in the dying minutes of FP3. Tetsuta Nagashima (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team), Championship leader Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team’s Remy Gardner and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) are the riders to close out the top 10.

Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team) crashed at Turn 12 and headed to the medical centre for a checkup, with Gerry Salim (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) and Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team) crashing unhurt in the session also.

Fernandez heads into qualifying as a firm favourite for pole position, so can anyone stop him? The weather looks set to take another turn for the worse in Aragon, so tune in at 15:05 local time (GMT+2) to watch Moto2™ qualifying unfold.
