Dominique Aegerter became a regular World Championship competitor in the 2007 season, after enjoying Grand Prix appearances towards the end of 2006 at Estoril and Valencia with Multimedia Racing. The Swiss youngster started out in motocross, before switching his focus to road racing. In 2003 he achieved seventh position in the ADAC Junior Cup, subsequently competing in the German 125cc national championship until his Grand Prix debut appearances.

Aegerter rode alongside Raffaele de Rosa and Simone Grotzkyj in his rookie season, and had three point-scoring finishes before the end of the year. He rode for the Ajo Motorsport team in 2008, alongside eventual 125cc titlist Mike di Meglio. Although Aegerter lagged behind his 2008 teammate in the rankings, in just his second full season in Grand Prix racing he achieved 16th position overall. In 2009 under the Ajo Interwetten banner Aegerter is accompanied in the pit garage by new German signing Sandro Cortese.
