Like most of his peers Shane Byrne tumbled into road racing through school boy motocross. His first foray into asphalt occurred in 1996 at the age of ? and he won. 1998 saw his career kick into gear with the British Supersport title and he began contesting the high-profile and competitive British Superbike Championship midway through 1999. Riding a Honda, Suzuki and then Ducati in the following seasons he racked up results of 14th, 8th and 4th respectively in a creditable line of progression. A works Ducati rider from 2002, Byrne scored his first win that season and went on to claim the Championship title in 2003. The 26 year old has signed with the factory Aprilia team to make his MotoGP debut alongside fellow Briton Jeremy McWilliams for 2004.
