Debutante en el Campeonato del Mundo de 125cc en 2007, con el equipo Red Bull KTM, Steve Bonsey se convirtió en el primer piloto estadounidense que disputaba la temporada completa en la cilindrada desde que lo hiciera Alan Scott en los ochenta, y también en el primer piloto norteamericano presente en la categoría desde Jason di Salvo, en 1999.

Al igual que su compatriota Nicky Hayden, este joven piloto destacó en sus inicios en la especialidad de dirt track. Se inició en los circuitos de velocidad de asfalto en la escuela de pilotaje de Freddie Spencer y el año pasado dio el gran salto en su carrera deportiva con su entrada en la formación austriaca que dirige Harald Bartol. Tras una primera temporada de adaptación, en 2008 prosiguió su carrera con el equipo De Graaf Grand Prix, a los mandos de una Aprilia y cerró su segunda y última campaña en el octavo de litro con la 15ª plaza de la clasificación ( y un cuarto puesto en Portugal como mejor resultado del año).

Parecía que en 2009 Bonsey se quedaría sin montura al no concretarse una opción para debutar en los 250cc sin embargo tras las cinco primeras rondas el norteamericano ha vuelto de nuevo al Campeonato del Mundo de la mano del Milar-Juegos Lucky Racing, equipo privado español que le ha ofrecido una Aprilia LE con la que disputa el resto de la temporada.
