Vladimir Leonov es el único representante ruso en el Campeonato del Mundo de MotoGP de 2009. Su estreno en el escenario mundialista se produce en la categoría de 250cc. El piloto de 22 años corre para el Viessmann Kiefer Racing, equipo que regresa al cuarto de litro con una Aprilia LE.
Natural de Moscú, Leonov ha participado en pruebas de varias categorías desde que se estrenó en competición con 12 años. Sus incursiones en pruebas de motocross (125cc, y 250cc), Superstock y Supersport han ido perfeccionando su pilotaje y han convencido a Stefan Kiefer para darle la oportunidad de debutar en la categoría intermedia.
Cuando estrene su casillero de puntos en los Grandes Premios de 2009, Leonov se convertirá en el primer ruso que puntúa en el Campeonato del Mundo de 250cc.
