Oliveira tops FP1 before the rain comes down

Portuguese rider leads the way early on before the heavens open

Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) went quickest in FP1 in Austria, before the rain came down in buckets and put paid to any improvements. Dominique Aegerter (Kiefer Racing) took P2, ahead of Championship leader Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS).

In the wet, there were a slew of crashes at Turn 1 and Turn 3 – the hardest braking points on the track – with Morbidelli, Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team), Xavier Simeon (TAsca Racing Scuderia Moto2), Tarran Mackenzie (Kiefer Racing), Jorge Navarro (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) and Francesco Bagnaia (Sky Racing Team VR46) amongst long list of the fallers. There was also a crash for Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), who collected Marcel Schrötter's injury replacement Danny Kent (Dynavolt Intact GP).
