Marquez off to a flier on the Island

Championship leader tops FP1 in the Australian GP

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) went quickest in the first session of the Michelin® Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, topping the session despite not putting in a softer rear tyre for a time attack. Many in the field did as the weather looks unstable for Saturday, with a spot in Q2 on their minds already.

Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) was the closest challenger just +0.093 back, with Jack Miller (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) putting in a stunner in third – only 0.029 off Zarco and without using the soft rear tyre. It’s his first race back since breaking his leg only three weeks ago.

Championship challenger Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was fourth and ran wide on his quickest lap, ahead of Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), who locked out the top five. Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) was sixth, ahead of some impressive pace in a time attack from the first KTM of Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) was P8, with Bradley Smith (Red Bull kTM Factory Racing) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) completing the top ten.
