Schrötter quickest from Binder in opening Moto2™ session

German rider tops FP1 as the intermediate class take to a dry Phillip Island

Marcel Schrötter (Dynavolt IntactGP) got his Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix off to a perfect start as he ended Moto2™ FP1 at the top of the times. The German led the way from Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) after setting a fastest lap of 1:33.788, the South African 0.154 off that time, with Mattia Pasini (Italtrans Racing Team) completing the top three.

The conditions were clear for most of the session before the rain started to fall with around a minute to go. Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (SKY Racing Team VR46) eventually finished fourth fastest, beating fifth place and title rival Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) by 0.051.

Remy Gardner (Tech 3 Racing) suffered a huge highside in the early stages of the session, thankfully the Australian rider was declared fit for his home GP after a checkup in the medical centre. Meanwhile, Stefano Manzi (Forward Racing Team), Jorge Navarro (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2), Sam Lowes (Swiss Innovative Investors) and Pons HP40’s Augusto Fernandez all crashed at Turn 4 – riders ok.

Moto2™ will be back out for FP2 at 15:30 local time (GMT +11) in a revised Friday schedule.
