Doohan: “He mentally needs to focus on what his goal is”

In part three, the Australian analyses his compatriot - Jack Miller

After having discussed the topics of Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), teammate Jorge Lorenzo, MotoGP™ Legend Dani Pedrosa and much more in part one and two, part three of motogp.com’s exclusive interview with Mick Doohan sees him turn his attention to fellow Australian Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing).

Mick Dooan - Interview

Miller is the only Australian rider in the premier class, and the MotoGP™ Legend would like to see his compatriot at the front more in 2019.

“I’m Australian, he’s Australian and it would great to see him, or any Australian but especially him because he’s in the right position, being able to channel his energy to get to the top of the sport. It’s good for the sport, it’s good for Australia – we need some other nationalities than just Italian and Spanish!”

However, Doohan believes that Miller still needs to work on his mental application. The five-time 500cc World Champion knows how much potential the Ducati rider has, but with better preparation, consistent podiums could be coming his way:

“Jack is fast, you can see that,” explained Doohan. “But for me, he just mentally needs to focus on what his ultimate goal is. The mental application I don’t think is as strong as his physical ability and if he can mentally get himself into a stronger position, then the consistency would be there. He can run at the front but then he’d make a small mistake.

“These are the type of things that don’t come down to luck, they come down to preparation and I think he could do better at preparation because he has the speed and he has the ability to learn how to channel the mental side of it to maintain the momentum and finish the race. You start finishing races on the podium, the next minute you’re fighting for the lead and the next minute you’re winning races and the Championship is a possibility.”
