In Q2 and times were coming thick and fast right from the get-go, with the Dynavolt Intact GP riders of Marcel Schrötter and Tom Lüthi who were pushing hard at the front, making it a true teammate tussle. In the end however, one late flying lap from Schrötter put him on pole position, the first German rider to take pole at Mugello in the Intermediate class since Martin Wimmer in 1985. With Lüthi taking second, it was a Dynavolt Intact GP one-two, whilst Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) placed in third.

With the Moto2™ race set to be a thrilling contest between home-heroes and fast-charging championship contenders, qualifying was crucial for many riders. With KTM struggling in the class, Jorge Martin (Red Bull Ajo KTM) was the only one who made it through to Q2, joined by Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), championship leader Lorenzo Baldassarri (FLEXBOX HP 40) and Rookie, Nicolo Bulega (SKY Racing Team VR46).
Heading up row two, it was a phenomenal performance from Nicolo Bulega, who put his Kalex machine on the second row for his best qualifying in the class. Leading the Italian charge, Bulega sits pretty ahead of an in-form Jorge Navarro (MB Conveyors Speed Up) who is fifth, whilst Bulega’s teammate Luca Marini makes it the SKY Racing Team VR46 bikes at the head and rear of row two, with the front six covered by just 0.4s.
Row three features Japanese sensation Tetsuta Nagashima (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team), who was just half-a-second from pole position, ahead of Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2), who took a hearty eighth position after a crash in FP3. Row three sees Augusto Fernandez in ninth; the Spaniard topped FP3 but failed to repeat this achievement when it mattered, making for an exciting surge from the Spaniard through the field on Sunday. Completing the top ten is Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team), who is still recovering from a broken collarbone.

It was a disaster in qualifying for Italian favourites Lorenzo Baldassarri (FLEXBOX HP 40) and Mattia Pasini (Petronas Sprinta Racing), as they will line up 15th and 18th respectively. However, Miguel Oliveira won from outside the top ten on the grid last year, so don’t rule out a typical Lorenzo Baldassarri Sunday comeback.
