３歳からポケットバイクを始めた青山周平は、桶川塾で技術を磨き、１６歳で初参戦した全日本ＧＰ１２５クラスで新人賞を受賞。２年後の０３年には３度の優勝を含む全戦表彰台獲得でタイトルを獲得。０４年にＧＰ２５０ｃｃクラスにステップすると、ランク２位と新人王を獲得。０５年は７戦中６勝の快挙で２度目のタイトルを奪取し、目標だったホンダのスカラーシップ第３期生に指名され、世界舞台に初挑戦する。
