Puig on Marquez tyre swap: "He took the decision by himself"

Repsol Honda Team Manager analyses the gamble that allowed the Championship leader to win in Aragon

The Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon saw Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) take another step towards the 2018 MotoGP™ World Championship after coming out on top in another classic premier class duel with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), with Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Andrea Iannone and Alex Rins also playing their part.

Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon: MotoGP™ Full Race

After beating the Desmosedici machines for the first time since the Sachsenring, Marquez now holds a 72-point advantage over Dovi in the standings. But his third straight victory in Aragon wasn’t just your average race win for the number 93: a last-minute tyre change gamble to a soft rear paid off, and Repsol Honda Team Manager explains all on

“Marc knew he could win and he gambled on changing the rear tyre at the last moment. He took the decision by himself. It was a risk, but he considered he could ride well with the soft spec,” comments Puig. “He stayed with the front riders, which was Dovizioso and both Suzukis. Meanwhile, Dani had problems with the hard rear, which suggests that Marc chose the correct tyre.”

Why did Marquez go for the soft rear at the last moment?

The Spaniard continues: “It was a great Sunday for us. It would’ve been even better with Dani (Pedrosa) on the podium because he had a chance of the top three. The most important thing is that Marc got his sixth victory of the season and increased his advantage in the Championship…”

The former Grand Prix rider also looks ahead to Thailand, a new track for the MotoGP™ paddock, as well as his view of the race from the pit wall.
