Ducati Corse Sporting Director Paolo Ciabatti was one of many key figures within the Italian factory to speak on Sunday during an Instagram Live. Factory riders Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci, Test rider Michele Pirro and Team Manager Davide Tardozzi, plus Ciabatti, all joined host Gavin Emmett for a catch-up with the Bologna manufacturer.
During the chat, Ciabatti informed us that he’s in constant communication with fellow factory bosses and members of MSMA (Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association) as they try to aid Dorna in the rescheduling of the 2020 MotoGP™ calendar. The Italian even admitted he thought a ten race World Championship would suffice in these difficult circumstances.
"We’re used to travelling, actually we should be in Austin right now," said Ciabatti. "Instead, we’re locked at home but we know we have to do it. Of course, it’s not what we expected. Unfortunately, it’s the same situation almost everywhere in the world. We must be strong, stay at home and, hopefully, it will finish soon and then we can go back to enjoying our passion: racing and friends.
"For us, we’re away from the office for almost one month and the company is also closed since March 13th. It’s difficult, not only on the racing side but also for the company because we can’t produce any bikes. Let’s hope things will come back soon to some kind of normality.
"We do a lot of Skype conference calls with the office, also we’re trying to get the opinion from the other manufacturers, members of MSMA. We need to understand what kind of measures we can also suggest to Dorna. I’m sure they are super-active, trying to figure out the situation, but I think from our side, we can also come up with some suggestions or solutions, which could be taken into consideration to see when it would be safe to start the Championship. For the moment, we have to stay safe and see when the pandemic will start to slow down. Then, we must think of different solutions, ideas to try to start the championship when it will be safe to do it.
"Hopefully we can still have maybe 10 races, which I think would be enough. Considering the circumstances, yes. It’s not the ideal situation but we’re not living in the ideal world right now. We must find an emergency plan and start to react at soon as possible. I think, considering the current situation, 10 races would be acceptable. I know that the FIM says to do the Championship with 13 races, but this is the goal in ‘normal’ conditions, but we’re not in normal conditions. The important thing is to start to do some races when possible, but we need to be all safe before that."
