Graziano Rossi: "Valentino has no desire to quit"

The father of Valentino Rossi offers his thoughts to Rai Sport regarding his son's future

It's a question on most people’s lips, isn’t it? The future of Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) beyond 2020 still remains uncertain but his father Graziano Rossi, a former motorcycle racer himself, seems to think the nine-time World Champion has plenty left in the locker.

The why and how of training on dirt with Valentino Rossi

In an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai Sport, Graziano offers his thoughts on his son’s future: “In my opinion, even for two, three or even four seasons... who knows,” says Graziano, regarding whether Valentino will continue riding in 2021 and maybe after that too. “But he has no desire to quit today and maybe not even in a year. I'm sure of this.”

Talking to MotoGP™ commentator Matt Birt and teammate Maverick Viñales over a video call, Valentino Rossi said “I have enough motivation and I want to continue… It’s not the best way to stop because the situation is that maybe we don’t race in 2020. So it’s fairer for me to do another championship and stop at the end of the next, so I hope to continue in 2021.”

However, as we already know, Rossi’s place in the factory Yamaha line-up has been taken by Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) for 2021, so a straight switch could be on the cards. Back to 2020 though and Graziano thinks having a shorter season could play into The Doctor’s hands. “I am sure that Valentino is still today a competitive rider and capable of winning races if the conditions are optimal. If in this difficult situation experience will be needed, for Valentino this could be an occasion,” ended Graziano, talking about the possibility of that elusive 10th title.
