Ezpeleta: "The 2020 Championship is wide open"

Speaking to Spanish publication as.com, Dorna Sports CEO offers his thoughts on the opening Grands Prix and Marc Marquez’ comeback

Chatting to Spanish publication as.com, Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has expressed his delight at how the MotoGP™ World Championship kicked off in 2020 at the Spanish and Andalucia GPs.

Unseen: Quartararo and Petronas celebrate back-to-back wins

Ezpeleta said: “The first two have gone wonderfully and serve to demonstrate that MotoGP™ can travel easily to anywhere to celebrate their races,” as the paddock completed the back-to-back races in a safe manner.

The Spaniard also believes the Championship is wide open after the first two races in Jerez, which saw Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) take his first two victories in the premier class, with reigning World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) fracturing his humerus and taking 0 points from either weekend.

“We feel what happened to Marc, but Marc is what he is because of the attitude shown last weekend,” said Ezpeleta, who – like the rest of us – were amazed at the number 93’s determination to try and ride at the Andalucia GP. “We spread his images doing push-ups as soon as he was operated on with his consent and it was tremendous how he was. Then he couldn't get to run, but at least He tried it.”

Despite the 50 point gap between Quartararo and Marquez, Ezpeleta is sure the title race is still wide open as we get set for Round 3 in the Czech Republic. “I'm not the one to talk about sports predictions, but I am very clear that the championship is still open despite Marc starting 50 points behind the leader, who is a Quartararo who has started off wonderfully.”
