"He hasn't forgotten how to ride a bike" – Santi Hernandez

AS.com caught up with Marc Marquez’ crew chief, Santi Hernandez, after the eight-time World Champion’s COTA victory

After Marc Marquez’ (Repsol Honda Team) second victory since his comeback from injury, AS.com caught up with the eight-time World Champion’s crew chief Santi Hernandez, to chat about his rider’s latest 25-point haul and what it means to the team.

What does this victory mean for Marc Marquez and the team?

“It means a lot. For Marc it is a joy, to be at the top again and it means that he hasn’t forgotten how to ride a motorcycle. It is a reward for all the work you are doing for your recovery. It means many things, and the same for us, because it has not been an easy year. This result encourages and makes us feel happy, for the team, but especially for Marc, who is the one who is suffering.

Is this victory more important than the one in Germany?

“Both Germany and Austin have been important. After spending a year without being able to race, and with the year that we have had, every victory is important this year. I don't downplay any of them. It is true that the one in Germany, because it was after so long, was more emotional.”

Will we see Marc Marquez winning more races in 2021?

"Hopefully, hopefully we can. That is what you work for, but this year, it’s not easy to be on the podium. It is expensive to be in front. For us, this year is to understand the bike and see what can be improved and how we can start working for next year. And for Marc, so that he can recover and little by little he has the feelings of always.”

How do you see Marc Marquez’ physical level now?

“Maybe he's not one hundred per cent better, as we would like, but little by little he's getting better. If we compare how Portimao was with now, well, there is progress, and that is the important thing. He hasn’t been stuck in his recovery. It is true that it is slow and when it is so slow it seems that the results cost more, but for me I am left with that now it suffers less.”
